As the little velodrome of Burnaby has grown over the past decade so has our 6 Day race. The 6 Day in 2005 was our first attempt and it was primarily a local field that was a great first effort. In 2006 the bar was raised as great sponsors came on board and we expanded the scope of the event to try to run it as close to a European 6 day race as possible.

There was food on every night and hot food and a beverage garden with a DJ spinning tunes for the prime weekend nights. We added more flavour with the crazy courier races with Le Mans starts and the blind folded courier track stand competitions on the infield while Madison's were going on.

The main showcase was the Pro men's Madison Teams. We felt we had one of the most competitive Madison fields in North America in the past 15-20 years. We had the Canadian National team, the Canadian Champion team, the Symmetrics Pro team, Pro Tour rider Tyler Farrar paired with Kenny Williams for the Cofidis team, the US National Team, the US U-23 and Hungarian U-23 Champions paired together and local Symmetrics Pro paired with local Junior phenom Cody Campbell. The racing was fast a furious right from the gun and did not let up any night. In the end it was the Symmetrics duo of Svein Tuft and Zach Bell who took the Atac Champions jersey's and the 2006 Giant 6 Days of Burnaby.

2007 and moving into 2008 will see more of the same but on a grander scale. Our prize purse will be up. We even have a dedicated website for the event (www.burnabysixday.com). Look for more of the same and some additions for the lower categories including a Madison Cup for the A and B groups. There will also be an international Sprint and Keirin competition featuring some of the top riders in North America. Most importantly we hope to see many spectators out watching the action. It is rare in these days of multi-million dollar athletes that you can come to an event and meet the athletes in person. Get up so close to the action you can feel the speed.
